About Richard
With a career spanning decades, Richard is internationally respected for his visionary style, modernist aesthetic, and dedication to beauty in its purest form.
Originally from Sheffield, Yorkshire in the North of England, Richard first studied Art and Art History—laying the creative foundation for what would become a lifelong career in hair. His early days behind the chair began in his hometown, but a restless drive for excellence soon led him to London and to the legendary Vidal Sassoon. Over the next 18 years, Richard immersed himself in the Sassoon philosophy, honing a unique signature defined by simplicity, precision, and forward-thinking design.
In 2005, Richard took a bold step forward, leaving Sassoon to found his own brand—Saco. Under his creative leadership, Saco grew from a singular vision into a global name, spanning three continents and redefining contemporary hair education and design. Richard’s deep belief in quality, authenticity, and artistry became the cornerstone of the brand’s success.
Yet in 2025, the circle came full as Richard returned to his spiritual home Vidal Sassoon, to take up the mantle of International Creative Director. With this return, he brings not only a wealth of global experience but a renewed energy and devotion to the timeless values that define Sassoon: quality, professionalism, and modernity.
Throughout his career, Richard has earned acclaim both on and off the stage. His editorial work spans the pages of Vogue, i-D, Tatler, and many more, having collaborated with some of the most iconic photographers of our time such as Norman Parkinson, David Bailey and Peter Lindbergh. His work speaks with clarity and confidence, always rooted in his belief that great hair design should be both intelligent and beautiful.
In 2012, he launched NOISE—a visceral, underground celebration of hair as art. With its raw energy and uncompromising vision, NOISE quickly became one of the most talked-about shows in the industry, known worldwide as the must-see event for those seeking the cutting edge of creative hair design.
2025 marks another major milestone, as Richard receives his fifth nomination for British Hairdresser of the Year—a testament to his continued relevance, innovation, and influence.
Today, Richard Ashforth remains a defining figure in global hairdressing. His work reflects a deep respect for tradition alongside a fearless embrace of the new—simple, powerful, and always beautifully executed. “For me,” he says, “it’s always been about honest, modern, meaningful beauty.”
